First News is the award-winning weekly newspaper for children (aged 7-14). In 24 pages every week the newspaper features a blend of stories about world and home affairs, the environment, sports, entertainment and puzzles all selected to engage young minds. Fun design brings the stories to life, and competitions and a sprinkling of celebrities hold the reader's attention from cover to cover.

Editor's review of First News

Parents keen to make sure their son or daughter stays up-to-date with current events might want to consider taking out a subscription to First News. The weekly newspaper, which is aged at kids aged between seven and 14, offers an engrossing mix of news, entertainment and sport in a 24-page package.

Launched in May 2006, it is the only weekly national newspaper aimed at children and is written especially for the younger demographic, with stories designed to be easy to understand and digest.

The award-winning publication is currently in use in 25 per cent of classrooms across the UK and a subscription is the perfect way to give youngsters who do not have access to the magazine the chance to read about home and foreign news, the environment and other current affairs, in a format that is tailored for them.

It has won praise from director of the National Reading Campaign Julia Strong, who said First News has "broadened the range of what children are offered to read", something that is "essential in helping them develop as independent and enthusiastic readers".

Professor of journalism at London's City University Roy Greenslade is also impressed with the publication. Writing in the Guardian, he said his seven-year-old grandson "appears to be hooked" on First News and reads it as soon as it arrives through the mailbox each week.

"At least one item in each issue always appears to catch his eye," he remarked.
